Pet Portraits FAQ

1. Commission Process

How much do your pet portraits cost?

I take great pride in creating highly detailed, hand-drawn pet portraits using the finest materials. With over 25 years of experience as a professional pet portrait artist, I offer a bespoke service that reflects the time, care and craftsmanship that goes into each piece. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, my work may not be the right fit for you. However, if you value quality and precision I would love to work with you. The cost of your portrait depends on the size of the artwork and how many pets you would like portrayed. To view my portrait sizes and pricing options, please visit my Pet Portrait Prices page.

Will my pencil portrait truly Capture my pet?

Yes. Creating a lifelike representation of your pet is something I take great pride in. My goal is to capture not just their appearance, but also their unique personality and essence. I always encourage clients to send me a variety of photos, showing your pet in different poses and angles. This helps me build a true picture of them. If you have any special memories, quirks, or stories about them, I’d love to hear them too!

Pet Portraits FAQ

What is your waiting time?

I have a continual waiting list for my pencil portraits all year round and I only accept a certain number of commissions each year. If you are hoping to commission a pencil drawing as a gift for friends and family, contact me as soon as you can so that we can discuss your requirements. Whatever the time of year, do get in contact, you never know, I may have a space. Please contact me as early as possible to check availability.

Do you accept commissions worldwide?

Yes! I have been commissioned to create pencil portraits from many places all around the world over the last 25 years. I find it fascinating to chat to clients from all walks of life.

Do you work from photographs?

Yes, I use one main photo for the pose for my pencil portraits. I am unable to look at a range of photos and create your pet in a pose. So it's important to find or take a photo that really captures your pet well. Photos are key and it is imperative to provide me with the best possible quality photo you can. My pencil portraits are fairly realistic so I need to see plenty of detail and I am unable to work from low resolution photos or any that are blurred or out of focus. Try not to send photos that have been downloaded from Facebook or screenshots from your phone. If in doubt, send me your photos and I will be able to let you know if I can work with them. Why not have a look at my Photography Tips page to see the kind of photos I prefer to work with.

How many photos should I send?

As many good ones that you have! Most of the time I am unable to meet the pets I draw. Having lots of lovely photos to see of them can be really helpful for me to get a rounded picture of what they are or were like. I also love to hear any funny stories about them. If you can it's always lovely to have something to share on my blog and pencil portraits website to go along with the portrait.

Can you add or remove collars or items in the drawing?

Yes, absolutely! The most common item to remove are collars. I can also add a favorite toy which is a popular one. I’m happy to accommodate your requests. If you have any specific changes in mind, try to send me clear reference photos so I can make sure I can see the changes required. I will also create a mock-up, so you can see how the adjustments will look in the final piece.

Can you combine dogs from single photos?

Yes, this is often the best way of taking photos of your pets if you would like a combined portrait. I do like to see photos of the pets together, just to gauge size relationship between them.

Can you work from photo prints?

I always prefer high-resolution digital photos, as they provide the best detail for creating a highly accurate portrait. However, if you only have printed photographs, it might be possible for me to work from them. If you take a photo of them with your phone and email them to me, I can assess their quality and let you know if they are suitable for use. If they are, you are welcome to post them to me.
